Best Bench Vise

A vise is an important tool for any workshop. It is a tool that holds an object securely when you work on it. The parallel jaws of the vise when held together with the help of a threaded lever hold the work piece in its place. Vises find widespread usage in metalworking, electronics, woodworking and model making industries.

As there are several types of vises available in the market, choosing the best one for your requirement would require consideration of certain factors. You can consider factors like the use of the vise, throat depth, construction of the vise, jaw length and weight of the vise when looking for an ideal vise.

A bench vise is attached to the bench and the work pieces are held parallel to the bench so that work on them can be easily completed. To make your job easier, we have compiled a list of the best bench vises available in the market. These vises have been reviewed on the basis of the factors mentioned above and their price. You can check out the list to find the ideal one that suits your requirement and your budget.

Yost LV-4 Home Vise, 4

Ok, I really feel this is going to suit my needs… to build and maintain AR-15 carbines, pistols, etc. The bonus in my opinion is the pipe jaws (Reaction Rod, or similar??) just below the main vise jaws, and something you don’t usually get on inexpensive vises from “Big Box” stores. I mounted this to a 1/2″ x 12″ x 24″ piece of birch plywood. Then “attached” it to a large plastic folding table (stowaway) for torquing down, and big jobs, and to make it modular… for smaller jobs I can just place the mounted vise on any table and do my work. The 9 lb. bench vise is perfect for this type of configuration for me and my limited space… without being cumbersome. The wiggle in the swivel lock that others have mentioned is still present in my vise, however that is why this product is so inexpensive… if you know that going into the purchase then it is what it is, and you can fix (easy) it if you can, or want to. For the price… it is worth it.

Yost 750-E Rotating Bench Vise

I am by no means a pro, but I like to tinker and consider myself a bit of a DIY kind of guy. I have wanted a vise for a long time and needed an excuse to buy one. I finally decided to buy this Yost and I could not be more pleased. The quality has been outstanding and I love love love having a reason to put this vise to use. i smile every time I walk by it on my garage work bench. I just recently completed a AR build and having this vise has greatly enhanced my ability to do it all at home to professional gunsmith standards. In fact, I will have to say buying this vise has probably saved me the money and time I would have spent going to a gunsmith for certain critical installs (barrel install especially). I can’t speak on any heavy duty usage, but I would happily buy this again if I ever needed another.

Olympia Tool 38-604 4-Inch Bench Vise

A reasonable vice for the money. It does have hardened plates in the jaws, though the screw seems to be budget quality. It seems fine for handyman jobs, though I’d spend a lot more for a Wilton if I needed really high strength. It’s a good pick for an inexpensive vice. The casting of the slide bar under the screw is a bit rough and the vice will bind a bit in spots as you turn the screw. Wipe the shipping oil off the bar and screw, then coat with some axle grease and the situation improves significantly. I haven’t noticed this interfering with it’s actual operation so I think it’s more of a look and feel situation.

Wilton 11104 Wilton Bench Vise, Jaw Width 4-Inch, Jaw Opening 4-Inch

This vise has been an awesome addition to my woodworking bench. I have recently taken up the hobby of woodworking and I needed some sort of vise. This vise has turned out very well for most of my woodworking needs. It is bench mounted so it will be up in the air and no flush with the bench. For woodworking this isn’t exactly optimal for all things but it gets me by for a lot of sawing and chiseling operations. This vise is also great for things like holding firearms for gunsmithing or holding other items for various hobbies. The 4 inch opening seems like more than enough for most things. The vise will also rotate which is useful for some things. Installation was very easy for me. I set the vise up where I wanted it on the work bench and used a pencil to mark the hole areas on the bench. I then drilled out the holes to match the diameter of the vise holes. I then installed the vise using 3 bolts, washers, and nuts I bought from home depot for a few dollars. It has stayed secured now for a few months no problem.I also bought these jaw covers in order to grip things like wood without deforming it as much:┬áLisle 48100 Vice Jaw PadJust remember, these pads will effectively lower the opening to under 4 inches.Pros:*Sturdy*Well machined for the price*Easy to installCons:*NoneAdditional Considerations:As I mentioned this vise is made to be mounted to the top of your workbench. So its not exactly optimal for all woodworking needs. It does great for a lot of things though. And it is especially good for things like holding firearms parts or other hobby tasks. If you want a nice woodworking vice you will probably want to check out a vise that is installed underneath the workbench and is level with the workbench. This allows more clamping operations on things. It also allows a more secure hold of something like a shooting board.Overall: 5/5 stars (>=.5 rounds up, <.5 rounds down) => 5 starsIf you have any further questions regarding the product in my review please leave a comment below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Yost Vises 445 4.5

If I had paid the full $155 mfg. price I probably would have given 4 stars, but for the $80 bucks I paid it is definitely five stars . The vise is well made and the paint finish is good. The auger is spring loaded to give a feel of precision when extending or retracting the jaws. The chrome plating is adequate but not like the bumper of a “show” car. The jaw inserts are chromed also with a nice gripping surface design and are replaceable. The handle has heavy rubber bands to dampen noise when it falls through. It is a tremendous improvement over the 3.5 ” Craftsman it is replacing. I like the fact that it will hold a 2 (1) x 6 side to side. For the home handyman/mechanic I think this vise will MORE than serve the purpose. The only negative is that when the jaws are closed they do not meet perfectly, one side has about .020 clearance while the other side is closed completely. This is minute and with slight pressure the jaws come together completely. I may be able to swap front and rear jaws or make adjustments to correct this, it’s practically a non-issue.

Woodworker’s vise is great! It is a tool every man needs to have. First, we all need an extra pair of hands in the shop. This tool can provide just that. Pieces of scrap wood can be bolted to the sides to not mar the wood piece you are working on. The vise is 6 1/2 inches across. And currently the price can’t be beat from a solid brand. Well constructed will extend out to around 5 1/2.

I use it almost every day for many different projects . I’ve put a lot of torque on several items and its held them rock solid. I use it for working my gun parts too, never an issue. TEKTON 4-Inch Swivel Bench Vise | 54004

Maybe it’s because this is my first bench vise and I was looking for something simultaneously affordable and of sufficient durability to last more than a month of light use. The reviews of this Tekton were glowing and the price was just right. After a glitch in shipping that Amazon rapidly remedied (excellent work, guys), I received the vise with a few holes punched through both boxes containing it. This is a heavy SOB and needs some better packaging. Nevertheless, it arrived unhurt and swathed in a light oil.Quality is excellent so far. The action is exceedingly smooth and there is absolutely no slop anywhere. Just looking at the handle with the intent to turn it will result in at least one half-turn (just kidding, but it is that instant and smooth). I was successful with 5/16″ mounting hardware, by the way. So that’s quality and price. How about durability? Well I plan on using the vise for smaller, household work so I don’t expect much and what I have seen so far has assured me that were I to continue using it in the way I’m planning, there’s no reason to suspect it will fail anytime soon.5 well-deserved stars.

  • Rubber bumpers
  • Aluminum body
  • Head rotates 360 and tilts 45
  • The width of the vise jaws are 3 inches and span open for a length of 2 inches

SE 8436MVC 3

This table vise is perfect for a small hobbyist workshop. I like that I can clamp it onto my workbench instead of having to mount it by drilling into the top like other more substantial vises. It is a great price for what you get, I will not be using it for heavy duty tasks like bending pipe or metal above 14 gauge so it’s perfect for smaller jobs. I love that there’s a very thick rubber grip on both sides of the vise so it doesn’t damage the material you’re using it on. One thing to note is that when I received mine the top clamp portion was a little loose, I just unscrewed one side of the clamp completely, then loosened the little gold screw underneath and pulled out the threaded bolt, and used an allen wrench to tighten and now it’s all set to go! I included a photo of the little gold screw you need to loosen underneath to do this in case yours is loose as well. I would highly recommend this vise!

The vises used by woodworkers, machinists and welders are different from those used at home. Therefore, you must choose accordingly. The weight of the bench vise is an important consideration if you are going to use the vise as an anvil. You must even take care that the work bench on which the vise is attached can handle the weight of the large vise and the work abuse that it has to go through.

We hope that you liked our review of the best bench vises and you were able to find the best one for your requirement. We would love to know about your choice of the vise and your experience of using it. If you have any other better vise models, do let us know.
